The arrogance of youth…
So i have been asked tonight, on here and Twitter, about my thoughts on ‘fans’ receiving abuse online, through Formspring, simply for being fans of my band. Well, without sounding too heartless here, the first question that i want to ask is, ‘why do people think that so many of their peers want to know about their lives, that the only way to handle the mass influx of attention is to host their own dedicated question and answer forum online? The sole purpose of which is to try and get through all the questions people have for them, because obviously this is the only way to deal with such overwhelming interest in their day to day lives right???’
The honest answer? My thoughts on people getting abuse on Formspring, run something along the lines of…’WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU ON THAT SITE ANYWAY YOU DICKHEAD???’
Are the plethora of other social media sites that you no doubt have in your name, not enough?? Do you REALLY need a site dedicated simply to answering peoples questions?? Are you THAT naive to think that if you open yourself up to the world, people aren’t going to use it to annoy, or upset you??
This celebrity obsessed culture we now live in, is bordering on insanity. We live in a time where people just want to be famous. They don’t care for the reason, they just want attention. We are like a nation of spoilt brats, all shouting “daddy daddy look at me, look at me” in unison. Fame used to be a by-product of being talented in a certain field. That talent would help you rise to the top, whereby more and more people would know about you, and that would become known as ‘fame’. It isn’t and was never meant to be, a goal in itself. Simply because it’s fleeting and totally based on the whim of the masses, which as we all know is fickle on the best days. If you are famous because you are good at something, then whether you are talked about or not talked about, you are still doing the thing that you love.
If you are egotistical enough to think that you really need a place where people can ask you questions about you, where you can talk all about yourself, because your opinion is THAT important and leftfield, then to be quite honest, you are asking to be abused.
If you are going to put yourself out there publicly then you have to be able to take the good with the bad. If you are that sensitive, whereby some anonymous person’s insult to you, about something you do or something you say or something you like, upsets you, then maybe you should think about winding your neck back in, and stop being so desperate for attention. By being on that site you are just making yourself a target.
Bottom line is, if you aren’t in the public eye for some valid reason, or aren’t someone with any great epiphanies or wisdom to impart, and you have a Formspring account, then you my friend are a turd.
Grow up, wind your neck in, stop being so desperate for peer approval and recognition, get off the fucking internet and worry more about doing something with your life, than what people you don’t know think about you.
If I don’t have a Formspring, then you certainly don’t fucking need one.
Peace up, A Town down.
